A delegation of Nigerian lawmakers will be dispatched to the United Kingdom to visit former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, who are confronting organ harvesting charges in the European country.
After a one-hour closed-door meeting on Wednesday June 29, Senate President Ahmad Lawan announced that the delegation, comprising members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, is scheduled to depart for London on Friday July 1.
The purpose of the visit is to meet with the British High Commission in Nigeria to gather more details on the case. The delegates were briefed about Ekweremadu’s situation during the closed session and updated on the role of the Nigerian High Commissioner to United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafadeen Ishola, in providing necessary assistance to Ekweremadu.
The High Commission has reportedly engaged lawyers to defend the Ekweremadus against the charges they are facing.
Lawan also mentioned that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is offering diplomatic support to Ekweremadu.
“The High Commission has been providing all Consular Services including the engagement of lawyers to defend Ekweremadu. Because the issue is already in court, there is a limit to which we can comment. We assure the family we will continue to do our best to support him.”
Lawan reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to securing the necessary support for Ekweremadu and his wife during this challenging time.
