The unexpected death of Belgian footballer Arne Espeel occurred on the pitch just moments after he made a crucial penalty save. Espeel, a 25-year-old goalkeeper for Winkel Sport B, collapsed after deflecting a penalty during a match against Westrozebeke at the Winkel Sport’s home ground in Sint-Eloois-Winkel, West Flanders Province.
Despite immediate intervention from emergency services, including the use of a defibrillator, Espeel was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a hospital. The cause of his death remains unconfirmed pending an autopsy scheduled for Monday.
Following the tragic incident, Winkel Sport issued a statement expressing deep mourning and offering heartfelt condolences to Espeel’s family and friends. The club emphasized that football would be taking a back seat for a period of time in light of the loss. Additionally, Winkel Sport B assistant Stefaan Dewerchin described the harrowing experience and the heavy emotional impact on the team.
