Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has resigned as the manager of Derby County, effective immediately, despite reports that the club is close to emerging from administration.
The all-time leading goalscorer for the England national team left his position just three days before the Rams were set to begin pre-season training. Rooney had one year remaining on his lucrative contract.
This announcement follows Derby County’s relegation from the Championship to League One, the third tier of English football, after receiving two separate points deductions for entering administration and breaking financial regulations earlier in the season.
“Throughout the summer, I have been closely monitoring developments relating to the ownership of Derby County,” Rooney stated in a club release.
“Today, I met with the administrators to convey my decision to leave the club. They made significant efforts to persuade me to reconsider, but my mind was made up.
“My time at the club has been a rollercoaster of emotions, with both highs and lows, but I must say that I have relished the challenge.
“Personally, I believe that the club now requires a leader with a fresh perspective, unaffected by the events of the past eighteen months. I will always look back on my time at Derby with immense pride and fondness, and I would like to express my gratitude to all my staff, players, and, of course, the fans for their incredible support. I will never forget you and hope to see you all again in the near future, during happier times.”
Last week, American businessman Chris Kirchner withdrew his bid to acquire the club.
“Furthermore, I am aware that there are still potential buyers interested in assuming control of the club,” added Rooney. “To them, I say this: Derby County is a fantastic club with a rich history and passionate fans. I wish you all the best and much success in the future.”
A spokesperson for Derby’s administrators expressed disappointment with Rooney’s decision.
“The joint administrators are deeply disappointed by Wayne’s choice to depart the club. We made efforts today to convince him to stay, but we understand his reasons for wanting to leave,” they remarked. “We are immensely thankful for his outstanding work in the face of challenging on-field circumstances during the 2021/22 season and admire the manner in which he has guided the team, the club, and the local community through various off-field issues.”
“The joint administrators acknowledge that employees and supporters will be frustrated and equally saddened by this news, but we all wish him, his wife Coleen, and their four sons every success in the future, and we are confident they will always be welcomed back.
“All parties acknowledge the necessity of concluding a sale of the club’s business and assets urgently. The joint administrators want to reaffirm that Wayne’s departure will not hinder the ongoing, positive discussions.”
