Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is preparing to release its new app Threads, which is designed to compete with Twitter. The launch date is set for Thursday, June 6.
Threads will be integrated with Instagram and resembles a dashboard similar to Twitter, focusing on text-based conversations.
The app has been made available for pre-order on the Apple Store and is expected to be linked to Instagram. Meta describes Threads as a “text-based conversation app”.
“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what will be trending tomorrow,” the app’s description on the Apple Store reads.
Notably, the new app from Meta bears a striking resemblance to Twitter, and its launch coincides with various features introduced by Elon Musk.
“Thank goodness they’re so sanely run,” Mr. Musk responded to a tweet about Threads, in what seems to be a fresh jab at Mr. Zuckerberg.
Meanwhile, Twitter announced that its popular user dashboard, TweetDeck, will become a paid service in 30 days. This follows Musk’s efforts to drive user sign-ups for Twitter’s subscription service, Twitter Blue, including limiting the number of tweets users can view, citing extreme “data scraping”.
In contrast, it seems that Meta’s Threads app will be a free service without any restrictions on the number of posts a user can view.
