Jelena Ostapenko is a professional tennis player who was born on June 8, 1997, in Riga, Latvia, to Jevgengis and Jelena. Despite having a sibling, Jelena is her parents’ only child. She began playing tennis at the age of five, introduced to the sport by her mother. Growing up, she idolized American tennis player Serena Williams. With the support of her parents and her own determination, she has emerged as one of the world’s most promising young tennis players.
In 2014, Jelena Ostapenko won the junior Wimbledon tournament and was named the world’s second-best junior player. Her biggest achievement came in 2017 when she became the first Latvian player to win a Grand Slam at the French Open singles championship, also making history as the first unseeded player to win the title since 1933. Additionally, she has won seven singles and eight doubles championships on the ITF Women’s circuit. As of March 2018, she reached a career-high ranking of world No. 5 in singles, and she is currently ranked No. 21 in the world by the WTA.
Jelena Ostapenko’s Parents: Jelena Jakovlena And Jevgenijs Ostapenko
Jelena Ostapenko is the only child of Jelena Jakovlena and Jevgenjis Ostapenko. In addition to Jelena, her father has a son named Maksim from a previous marriage. She was born to a Latvian-Russian mother and a Ukrainian father. Jevgenjis Ostapenko, her father, was a professional soccer player, and her mother, Jelena, is a former tennis player turned teacher.
Exposed to athletics at an early age, Jelena started training at five years old under the guidance of her mother. Her parents also enrolled her in dancing courses, which she credits for improving her footwork in tennis. In 2012, Jelena’s parents took on the roles of coach and fitness trainer as she began her professional career. Unfortunately, her father passed away on January 3, 2020. Jelena announced his death on social media and consequently resigned from the 2020 ASB Classic Open.
